William was born in Barrie, Ontario, and has lived and travelled extensively across Canada. Recently, he spent several years in the “Barren Lands” of the Northwest Territories. He achieved his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in mid-life and takes seriously the rights and responsibilities accorded to the designation ‘artist’, constantly pushing and challenging established boundaries. William’s work ranges in technique and medium, from traditional oil painting to multimedia installations and sculpture.
In this new series of luminous works, he explores our attraction to the many fervid choices of lush and liquid colour.
The original composition is begun on a light table and often with other sources of intense directed light. The pigments used are chosen for their ability to allow both the transmission and also often the reflection of light. The substrate is often glass or a variety of other common bases for pigment. Applying the pigments is done with a variety of instruments ranging from traditional artist’s brushes through pallet knives, pinheads and points, eyedroppers, air blasts and so on. These methods allow the artist to build the image from all sides, and enables the final composition to be freed from the traditional restrictions of orientation.
The composition is transferred to the computer and further fine-tuned for the desired effect. When William is satisfied with the quality of the digital file, it is then produced using archival inks, mounted onto MDF, and laminated for protection.
Hanger slots are positioned on the back and cut for all four sides of each work of Art.
All owners of this “Turnable Art” are encouraged to occasionally change the orientation of each piece in order to allow their imagination and personal history to arrive at their own interpretations of the work. Those owning groupings of Turnable Art are advised to freely position the artwork to create new and unique art viewings as fits their temperament and circumstance, and then change them as often as desired.
