Established in 1984, the founders at Kalora Interiors had been working together on a United Nations mission in Somali refugee camps. They were eventually able to begin International Development Enterprises(IDE), a multi-national non-profit company for developments. Kalora was created as a hybrid company to integrate the needs of consumers in the western world with the needs of suppliers from the developing world.

Kalora test marketed some products while the IDE was working in Asia and Africa. Jute rugs from Bangladesh, made of Natural Fibres were one of the principal rugs to be tested. The original reaction at a private furniture show put on by Palliser Furniture in Winnipeg, Canada, was reassuring.

Two UN backed factories were selected as the original source of supply, and Kalora was formally incorporated as an area rug distributor. Kalora has extended its assortment of products and sources of supplies, which include, but are not limited to, hand made rugs from India, and machine-made rugs from Belgium and Turkey.

Kalora and Palliser have upheld a very close relationship with one another, as rugs and furniture aid in helping to retail one another. Kalora and the IDE still preserve and share a partnership, as the IDE is now focusing on increasing the income of families who are living on less than a dollar a day in developing countries.
